For Clients, Web Development Should be Painless.

But it's amazing how many web design horror stories we hear. It seems like the stories are the same, played out in different places and with different people. Phillip’s scenario is a combination of different horror stories. Let’s look at what went wrong.

Poor Communication
Communication was an important issue for Phillip. He wanted to know that his website was on track and that things were running smoothly. His anxiety levels began to climb when his web design company took their sweet time calling him back.

No Milestones
Local Web Design Company didn't set a completion date with Phillip. Key performance indicators and milestones weren't outlined before their project started, so neither side had any idea when the project would be completed or what a successful project looked like. It's no surprise that client expectations weren't met.

Snobby Tech-Speak
It's a common thing for technology providers to commit the cardinal sin and talk down to their clients. But it's a stupid thing to do and a great way to lose customers.

Why it's Frustrating You, the Customer
As a customer you probably don't care about the intricate parts of a web developer's job. You don't care about how long a project was, how hard it was, or any of technical aspects of the project. And why should you? That’s why you’ve hired developers. What you probably care about is:

  • Your project being completed on-time and in-budget.
  • Your return on investment.
  • Your website functioning as expected.
  • Your website helping to achieve your business goals.
  • That your website is simple to maintain.

Why it's Frustrating for Web Developers
Occasionally clients, not understanding what it takes to complete a website, ask for the near impossible. When this happens web developers don't automatically get the right to talk down to their clients. After all, if clients understood the details of web development why would they need a web developer?


Phillip's Vendor Disappears
When Phillip decided that he'd had enough, he asked for is files and his domain name. His web design company, not wanting to lose business decided that they weren't going to give Phillip the very things he paid for, and disappeared.
